Sagittarius

NOV 22 – DEC 21 · RULER JUPITER · 240°–270°
Fire Mutable
Attested

Depicted as an archer, often in centaur form, on Babylonian boundary stones centuries before its Hellenistic codification into the standard zodiac.

The constellation sits toward the galactic center, giving it an unusually dense field of stars and nebulae that ancient observers would have seen as a bright patch even without instruments.

Living Tradition

Jupiter-ruled mutable fire; tradition holds Sagittarius as expansive and philosophical, restless for new ground whether physical, intellectual, or both.

As a mutable sign it is traditionally read as adaptable in direction but constant in appetite — the target changes, the reaching doesn't.

Modern Synthesis

Modern zodiac shorthand casts Sagittarius as the friend who's already booked a one-way flight before telling anyone the plan.

Mythology

Usually identified as a centaur archer, sometimes specifically Chiron, the wise and wounded centaur who tutored heroes — a reading that sits oddly with the more common wild-centaur imagery of the figure, and tradition itself is divided on which one it means.
